3x Broad Buckler Bareroot Ferns (Dryopteris Dilatata)
You are buying 3 organically grown Broad Buckler Fern (Dryopteris dilatata) Bareroot Plant Rhizomes up to 6cm in diameter.
Broad Buckler Fern (Dryopteris dilatata) is a robust, deciduous fern native to Europe and parts of western Asia. It features gracefully arching, finely divided fronds that can grow up to 100 cm long, creating a soft and elegant presence in shaded or woodland gardens. The stems of the fronds often have a distinctive, dark-brown scaly appearance, adding subtle texture to its overall look. The plant thrives in moist, shaded conditions and is highly tolerant of cold winters, making it an ideal choice for temperate gardens.
Organically and sustainably grown from spores and rhizome division, in our woodland here at Poet’s Acre, located in the heart of 1000 acres of organic farmland and ancient woodland in rural North Norfolk.
Plants are lifted to order as part of a sustainable management plan that encourages diversity and resilience. The land here is completely organic, we do not use pesticides or sprays of any kind.
Plant Care
Your bareroot Broad Buckler Ferns will arrive carefully packaged to prevent drying out. They have been pruned back for transportation to prevent damage and encourage healthy regrowth. The roots are dusted with mycorrhizal spores to enhance their connection with the soil microbiome, ensuring vigorous growth.
When you receive your plants, remove them from the packaging as soon as possible and soak the roots in clean rainwater for 1–2 hours before planting.
Plant in a cool, shaded, or semi-shaded location with humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil. For best results, amend the planting area with leaf mould or compost to mimic the fern’s natural woodland environment. Space the plants 60–90 cm apart to allow room for their fronds to unfurl and spread. Water thoroughly after planting, using the soaking water, and maintain consistent moisture levels, particularly during dry periods. A layer of mulch around the base will help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
Broad Buckler Ferns are low maintenance once established. Their lacy fronds may die back in the winter but will reemerge with fresh growth in the spring. Over time, the fern will naturally expand via rhizomes, forming attractive clumps. If needed, plants can be divided in early spring or autumn to propagate or rejuvenate dense clusters.
Garden Uses
Broad Buckler Fern is perfect for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and naturalized plantings. Its delicate, feathery fronds add texture and movement, making it an excellent companion for hostas, hellebores, and other shade-loving perennials. It is also effective for filling gaps in shaded areas and providing ground cover.
Wildlife Uses
The Broad Buckler Fern supports the health of woodland ecosystems by offering habitat and shelter for small creatures. Its fronds help retain soil moisture, creating a beneficial environment for soil-dwelling organisms and promoting biodiversity in the garden.
