10x Wild Native Blackberry 'Bramble' Plants (Rubus Fruticosus)
You are buying 10 organically grown Blackberry 'Bramble' (Rubus Fruticosus) bareroot plants.
Native wild Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus), the beloved ’Bramble’ of hedgerow foragers, with its wildlife supporting flowers, wholesome leaves, and delicious autumn fruits.
Organically and sustainably grown from bird sown seed or natural layering, in our woodland here at Poet’s Acre, located in the heart of 1000 acres of organic farmland and ancient woodland in rural North Norfolk.
Plants are lifted to order as part of a sustainable management plan that encourages diversity and resilience. The land here is completely organic, we do not use pesticides, or sprays of any kind.
Plant care
Your barefoot plants will arrive carefully packaged to prevent drying out. They have been pruned back hard for transporting to prevent damage and encourage strong and healthy regrowth.
Remove from packaging as soon as possible and soak in clean rainwater for a while before planting or heeling in until ready to plant in final positions. Water thoroughly after planting, using the soaking water. Position in full sun for best fruiting. Plants become dormant in the autumn and grow vigorously in the spring.
Fruiting will occur on two year-old stems. In ideal conditions stems can grow up to 4m in length. Regular pruning of older stems will encourage healthy growth and prolific fruiting.
Plants can be further propagated from seed, or by layering of growing stems. Stems can be trained up trellises or supporting shrubs or hedge plants and will spread readily if left unmanaged.
Garden Uses
Ideal as a fruiting/security addition to hedges. Brambles are pioneer species and are beneficial for reconditioning soils.
Wildlife Uses
Brambles are important food plants and the flowers for nectar-feeding butterflies and hoverflies. Many birds, and some mammals will feed on the nutritious fruits in autumn.
The leaves of brambles are often used as a main food source for pet stick insects and other phasmids.
Craft uses
Split bramble stems are traditionally used as binding material in basketry, and stems are sometimes used to protect other crops such as strawberries.
Culinary Uses
Berries are delicious raw, baked in pies and tarts, or made into jam. Leaves can be dried for tea.
